At Punchy Digital Media, we’re committed to creating projects that empower communities, with a focus on promoting health and well-being. That’s why we partnered with Jean Hailes, Australia’s trusted leader in women’s health, along with Monash University, CREWaND, and The University of Melbourne.

Together, we created four animated videos to provide midlife women with accessible, actionable health information. A study of nearly 500 women confirmed their positive impact, highlighting how video can improve healthcare outcomes.

In this blog, we explore the insights to understand how video can be leveraged to improve healthcare outcomes.

The Need: Addressing a Health Information Gap

Midlife is a pivotal stage in a woman’s life, often marked by transitions like menopause, shifts in physical health, and changing priorities. These factors play a significant role in determining long-term well-being and healthy ageing.

However, women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds or with lower literacy levels often face challenges accessing clear, practical health advice.

For these women, traditional resources—dense pamphlets, jargon-heavy guides, or inaccessible seminars—often fall short. What’s missing is content that is:

  • Engaging: Information needs to capture attention quickly and hold it.
  • Easy to Understand: Complex health topics must be simplified without losing accuracy.
  • Actionable: Viewers should be able to apply what they learn immediately.

Recognising this gap, our team set out to create a series of videos that would help deliver critical health messages with clarity and impact.

The Solution: Animated Videos for Simplified Communication

Animation proved to be the perfect medium for this project. Unlike traditional formats, animation allows for creativity and flexibility in presenting information, making it easier to visualise abstract concepts.

With this in mind, our team developed four short, animated videos:

  1. Two videos focused on menopause health: Covering hormonal changes, self-care strategies, and tips for managing common symptoms.
  2. Two videos promoting joint health: Offering practical advice for maintaining mobility, reducing discomfort, and staying active.

Each video was crafted with a focus on accessibility. Simple language, vibrant visuals, and clear instructions ensured that the content resonated with viewers across different literacy and education levels.

The Response: How Women Viewed and Valued the Videos

To gauge the impact of the videos, the team of academics and health professionals conducted an anonymous online survey of 490 women who watched them. Their feedback painted a powerful picture of the videos’ effectiveness.

Women Found the Videos Easy to Understand

The ability to simplify complex health topics was one of our main goals, and the results showed we succeeded:

91% to 92% of participants agreed that the information was “very easy to understand.”

This statistic highlights how accessible language and engaging visuals can demystify even challenging health topics, ensuring that viewers don’t feel overwhelmed.

Many Learned Something New

Despite the abundance of health information available online, a surprising number of participants—36% to 66%, depending on the video—said the content was new to them.

This underscores the importance of delivering information in formats that stand out and reach audiences who might otherwise miss out.

Practical Tips Encouraged Real Action

The true test of any health education initiative is whether it inspires action.

Between 70% and 89% of viewers said they were likely to use the practical tips shared in the videos.

Whether it was advice on managing menopause symptoms or exercises to improve joint health, the content resonated with women and motivated them to take control of their well-being.

The Power of Recommendations

Word-of-mouth recommendations are a hallmark of successful content.

Between 61% and 70% of participants said they would recommend the videos to others.

This vote of confidence not only validates the videos’ quality but also amplifies their reach, allowing more women to benefit.

Inclusivity in Action

One of the most significant achievements of this project was its inclusivity. We wanted the videos to resonate with women across different socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. The survey results confirmed that we achieved this goal.

Education Level Differences

Women with lower education levels were particularly enthusiastic about the joint health videos. They were significantly more likely to recommend these videos to others compared to women with higher education levels.

This finding is a testament to the accessibility of the videos and their ability to engage audiences who might otherwise feel left out of health-related conversations.

Socioeconomic Parity

There were no notable differences in responses between women living in disadvantaged areas and those in more affluent regions.

This suggests that the videos were equally relevant and valuable to all viewers, regardless of their socioeconomic status—a critical success in achieving equity in health education.

Lessons Learned: The Value of Bite-Sized Health Education

The success of this project offers several key takeaways for anyone looking to make an impact in digital health education:

  1. Keep It Simple: Clear language and visuals go a long way in making content accessible.
  2. Focus on Practicality: Viewers appreciate actionable tips they can implement in their daily lives.
  3. Leverage Animation: Animated videos are an engaging and effective way to communicate complex topics.
  4. Design for Inclusivity: Tailoring content to diverse audiences ensures it has the broadest possible impact.

A Vision for the Future

At Punchy Digital Media, this project reaffirmed our belief in the power of digital storytelling to drive change. By addressing unmet needs and leveraging creative formats, we’ve been able to make a real difference in the lives of midlife women.
